Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was comparatively subdued after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that included little new information.
