RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
